Na de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten is Carel van Hees enige jaren werkzaam als fotojournalist voor het Vrije Volk, NRC en Vrij Nederland. Na deze periode werkt hij aan langdurende projecten die naar buiten treden als boeken, films of installaties. In zijn werk zijn fotografie en film nauw verbonden en begint bij willen weten in een poging te doorgronden. De zich herhalende vraag wie we zijn en wat we er van maken is een terugkerende factor in zijn oeuvre.
Een aantal voorbeelden van zijn werk zijn o.a. het boek ‘Saxman’ (1993) over saxofonist Piet le Blanc, dat ook door hem verfilmd werd voor de VPRO. Met het boek >Play, a photographic record’ (2001) schetst hij een beeld van wat het betekend om jong zijn aan het eind van de 20ste eeuw. Cross Fade (2004). Een tentoonstelling waarin hij met foto’s en video reageert op de collectie van het Dordrechts Museum. Het boek en tentoonstelling ‘Eversteijn – bokser & herenkapper’ waren in 2011 te zien in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Een eerbetoon aan vriend en bokskampioen Cor Eversteijn. Document Nederland (2016) in opdracht van het Rijksmuseumfotografeert hij het onderwijs in Nederland.

— Een film over een zomerse ontmoetingen aan zee, met zowel documentaire als fictieve elementen. Een ode aan het leven en het voortschrijden van de tijd.
2KM2 (2008)
— Een film over zeden en gewoonten van een bijzonder volk. Met één gezicht naar het verleden en één naar de toekomst.
Dichter in het Atrium (2020)
— Vijf korte films over de Rotterdamse schrijvers Hans Sleutelaar, Peter Bulthuis, Rien Vroegindewij en Jules Deelder die hun liefde voor stad, leven, poëzie en muziek als geen ander onder woorden kunnen brengen.
Berichten uit de Hunkerbunker (2024)
— Een film gedraaid in 2021 toen de wereld in de greep was van Covid 19. De Hunkerbunker is een flat in Rotterdam en is een metafoor voor het leven in een stad.

After graduating from the Academy of Visual Arts, Carel van Hees worked for several years as a photojournalist for Het Vrije Volk, NRC, and Vrij Nederland. Following this period, he dedicated himself to long-term projects that materialize as books, films, or installations. In his work, photography and film are closely intertwined, stemming from a desire to understand and explore. The recurring question of who we are and what we make of it is a central theme in his oeuvre.
Some examples of his work include the book Saxman (1993), about saxophonist Piet le Blanc, which he also adapted into a film for VPRO. With the book Play, a photographic record (2001), he captured the essence of being young at the end of the 20th century. Cross Fade (2004) was an exhibition where he responded to the Dordrechts Museum collection using photography and video. The book and exhibition Eversteijn – boxer & gentlemen’s barber were showcased in 2011 at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen as a tribute to his friend and boxing champion Cor Eversteijn. Document Nederland (2016): Commissioned by the Rijksmuseum, he photographed education in the Netherlands.

— A film shot in 2021, during the global Covid-19 pandemic. The Hunkerbunker is a Rotterdam apartment building and serves as a metaphor for urban life.
